$10,000 cash bond for man accused of firing multiple shots in neighborhood

handcuffsGabriel G, Ortiz, 45 of Racine has been charged with Possess Short-barreled Shotgun/Rifle and one count of Felon Possess Firearm. He was given a $10,000 cash  bond after making his initial appearance today in Racine Circuit Court. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for October 1st.

According to the criminal complaint, on September 19,2015 at 5:30 a.m., Racine Police responded to numerous calls for shots fired and residents stating they  saw a muzzle flash in the 3400 block of Republic Ave and multiple shots fired in the neighborhood.

While speaking to officers, witnesses stated that they had seen a black vehicle circling the area and they report seeing a muzzle flash coming from the vehicle. Officers noted on scene quite a few people looking out their windows and a group of people outside.

The complaint states they made contact with a person who stated the suspect vehicle was right around the corner, officers arrived on that location they saw a short stocky male (later identified as the defendant),  open the car door, run to a location in the 3400 block of Victory, appear to drop something and run to the front of the home.

Racine police established a perimeter, observed 5-7 spent shell casings in the vehicle, a shell casing located outside the vehicle, and an additional 4 casings located near the house.

Racine Police were given permission to search the residence by the owner, according to the criminal complaint and they located the defendant and a shotgun wrapped in a blanket outside of the residence. According to police reports the barrel of the shotgun measured 13 inches, 5 inches under the 18 inch limit. According to the criminal complaint the defendant has a prior felony conviction and is therefore unable to legally possess a firearm.
