1789 – Bishop Jackson Kemper Born

On this date Episcopal bishop of Wisconsin, , was born in New York. After attending Columbia College, he headed west to work as a missionary. He went on to found the and Racine College in Wisconsin. He constantly urged more extensive outreach to the Native American community and advocated translating the scriptures and church services into Indian languages. Kemper served as a bishop in Wisconsin from 1859 until his death in 1870.
