1832 – George Edwin Bryant Born

On this date George Edwin Bryant was born in Baldwinsville, Mass. In 1856 he moved to Madison and practiced law. During the Civil War, he served as captain in the 1st Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry from 1861-1862 and served as colonel of the 12th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry from 1862-1864.  . After the war, he participated in politics and worked on his cattle-breeding farm in Blooming Grove. After serving as a Dane County judge from 1865-1877, he served in the Wisconsin State Senate from 1875-1876 and was quartermaster general from 1876-1882. He also served as Madison postmaster from 1882-1886 and 1890-1894. He supported Robert M. La Follette and was state superintendent of public property from 1901-1907.
