1835 – Journalist Horace White Born

On this date Horace White, economist and journalist raised in Beloit, was born in Colebrook, New Hampshire. His father had been a representative for the New England Emigrating Company that secured for his group in 1836-1837. In 1854 he became city editor at the . In 1855 he became the Chicago agent for the New York Associated Press and in 1857 Horace White accepted a position at the , where he also became a stockholder. White was the paper’s reporter for the Lincoln-Douglas Debates and the Washington correspondent during the Civil War. He died in New York City on September 16, 1916. [Source: ]
