1837 – Darwin Clark Arrives in Madison

On this date Dane County pioneer arrived in Madison, just three hours before another area pioneer, Simeon Mills, arrived. Clark arrived in Madison from Otega, New York, and worked as a carpenter on the first state capitol building. In 1844 he purchased the first plot of land and built his home. Located on Main Street, Clark also ran a furniture store out of the second floor of the structure. [Source: ]
