1862 – (Civil War) Union forces defeated at Second Bull Run

The 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th and 7th Wisconsin Infantry regiments fought in the Second Battle of Bull Run. On the first day, outnumbered Confederate troops had managed to hold on until 28,000 reinforcements arrived. On the second day, August 29, they conducted the largest mass assault of the war, crushing the Union adversaries and forcing a wholesale retreat toward Washington, D.C.
