1863 – (Civil War) Second Assault on Vicksburg, Mississippi

Union troops attacked Vicksburg for a second time after bombarding it with artillery for two nights. The 1st Wisconsin Light Artillery and 8th, 11th, 14th, 17th, 18th and 23rd Wisconsin Infantry regiments participated. Although outnumbered 2-to-1, Confederate troops commanded higher ground and repulsed repeated advances. After this defeat, Union forces dug in for a six-week seige.
