1864 – (Civil War) Second Battle of Ream’s Station, Virginia

The 36th Wisconsin Infantry took part in the Second Battle of Ream’s Station, Virginia. This engagement, like the Battle of Weldon Railroad the previous week, attempted to disrupt Confederate supply lines into Petersburg. The 36th Infantry was positioned in a railroad cut between two hills and surrounded by Confederate troops. Of 175 enlisted men and 11 officers who went into the fight, only 48 reported for duty the next day. The majority had been killed, wounded, or taken prisoner.
