1874 – Zona Gale Born

On this date was born in Portage. Gale graduated from UW and worked as a writer for various Milwaukee papers. The series were her most popular novels. Gale used Wisconsin as the setting for many of her literary works. She received critical recognition for (1918), (1920), (1926), (1928), and (1930). She received a Pulitzer Prize in 1921 for her play . She was also a member of the UW Board of Regents from 1923 to 1929 and was an enthusiastic campaigner for the Zona Gale died on December 27, 1938.
