1915 – William Proxmire Born

On this date was born in Lake Forest, Illinois. Proxmire, a graduate of both Yale and Harvard, served in the Military Intelligence Service during World War II. He was elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly in 1951 and ran unsucessfully as the Democratic candidate for governor in 1952, 1954, and 1956. He did however successfully campaign for the United States Senate seat left open by the death of in 1957. Proxmire held this seat until January 3, 1989.
