1920 – Composer and Pianist Robert Moevs Born

On this date composer and pianist Robert Walter Moevs was born in La Crosse. Moevs studied music at Harvard University and at the Paris Conservatory from 1947 to 1951. He taught at Harvard from 1955 to 1963. Moevs was on staff at Rutgers University from 1964 to 1981, where he served as Professor from 1968 and Music Department Chairman from 1974 to 1981. Moevs was influenced by Boulez and described his own composition method as `systematic chromaticism’, a modified serial technique. Moevs received a Guggenheim Fellow in 1962.
