1953 – Wayne Morse Sets Filibuster Record

On this date Wayne Morse, Republican Senator from Oregon, broke Robert LaFollette’s record for the Senate’s longest filibuster. Morse, who was born in Wisconsin, held the floor for 22 hours and 26 minutes in his attempt to stop Tidelands Oil legislation. LaFollette held the floor for 18 hours and 23 minutes to oppose a 1908 currency bill. Morse lost his title to Strom Thurmond in 1957 when Thurmond set the current record of 24 hours and 18 minutes trying to stop Civil Rights legislation. [Source: ]
