1957 – Oskar Hagen Dies

On this date Oskar Hagen, professor of Art History at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Born in 1888 in Wiesbaden, Germany, Hagen studied at the Universities of Berlin, Munich and Halle. He taught art history at the University of Goettingen from 1918-1925. While in still in Europe, Hagen studied composition with Carl Schuricht and Engelbert Humperdinck. He founded the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Department of Art History in 1925 and served as its director for twenty-three years. Oskar Hagen’s daughter is the Tony Award-winning actress and Wisconsin native, Uta Hagen. [Source: ]
