1990 – Partially victorious, ROTC protestors end sit-in

On this day protesters ended a six day sit-in outside University of Wisconsin Chancellor Donna Shalala’s office. The sit-in began with more than 30 demonstrators protesting that the Reserve Officer Training Corps programs on campus excluded people based on their sexual preference, a violation of UW and state law. The University agreed to distribute a two-page letter outlining the issue to all incoming freshman, as well as discussing it at new student orientation and in the student handbook.
