2009-2010 Proposed School Start Changes
ByRacine – Racine Unified’s priority is educating every student to be career ready or college bound upon graduation. As the district is currently facing a $3.5 million deficit for the 2009-2010 school year, the proposed three-tiered busing system will require a start time change for some schools. The proposed measure will help to keep any cuts away from direct classroom instruction.
Direct Classroom instruction refers to all levels such as teachers, educational assistants, secretaries and custodial staff which are ALL integral to a student’s learning environment. The three-tiered busing system will eliminate 20 buses on the road. Each bus costs $25,000 a year.
Racine Unified considered the length of the school day, tried to keep new times within 30 minutes of the current start and end times as well as no school dismissal after 4:00 p.m. Three-tiered busing is more efficient and is projected to save the district approximately $500,000 per year in transportation costs.
This implementation will help to not raise taxes and continue to maintain improvements to the classroom.
