Congresswoman Gwen Moore Announces Millions in Federal Housing Funding for Milwaukee County From The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act

Washington, DC – Yesterday, less than two weeks after voting for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, Congresswoman Gwen Moore (WI-04) announced $13,558,683 million in federal funds were awarded to various jurisdictions in Wisconsin’s 4th Congressional District. The funds, secured in part by Moore’s efforts, will provide funding for two key U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) programs, and the Homelessness Prevention and Community Development Block Grant Programs (CDBG), currently being utilized by localities in the 4th Congressional District.
“The passage of the Recovery Package is beginning to yield benefits for the people of my district and the state of Wisconsin,” said Congresswoman Moore. “The funding provided to the county and municipalities in my district will make a difference to thousands of families in need. During these very difficult economic times it is imperative that we do everything that can be done to help our neighbors and our neighborhoods.”
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 provided funds for Homelessness Prevention Grants. These funds will help provide financial and other assistance to prevent individuals and families from becoming homeless and to help those who are homeless quickly find housing and stability. Funding from this program can be used by local governments to help families in need with short and medium term rental assistance, provide assistance with utility bills, rental down payments, housing relocation, moving cost assistance, and other housing needs.
Another provision of the recovery package provides additional funding for HUD’s Community Development Block Grant program, which enables local governments to direct a wide variety of funding intended to create suitable living environments, provide decent affordable housing and create economic opportunity for low- and moderate- income individuals. In an effort to immediately stimulate local economies the Recovery package directs those receiving funds to award contracts within 120 days.
“I applaud the Administration and am especially thankful to Congresswoman Gwen Moore and the Congressional delegation for the unprecedented opportunities contained in the new Stimulus law,” said Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett. “The CDBG dollars awarded to Milwaukee today will help advance economic development projects and create jobs quickly, producing lasting economic impacts. The funds we will receive under HUD’s Homeless Prevention Program will also protect our most vulnerable citizens. I can’t think of anything more important that helping residents impacted by job loss, the threat of foreclosure and homelessness resulting from the economic downturn.”
“One of the priorities in the Recovery package was that it contain stimulative provisions,” said Rep. Moore. “The fact that the people of the 4th Congressional district are already seeing the impact of the Recovery package is a testament to Congress’ quick action on President Obama’s vision. It is important that we realize that the intention of these particular funds is to revitalize neighborhoods and help ensure that families currently faced with housing hardship will have, to the greatest extent possible, the resources and opportunity necessary to make it through these difficult times.”
