Jean’s Jazz Ends Season with Janet Planet, Lake Effect

By The Racine News Team

jazz2009Jean’s Jazz Series, presented by Educator’s Credit Union, brings its 8th season to a close on Thursday, April 2, with Janet Planet, who has been hailed as one of today’s best jazz singers. At 7 p.m., Lake Effect will kick off a cool night of hot music at the Racine Theatre Guild, 2519 Northwestern Avenue (Highway 38) in Racine.

Janet Planet has been praised by fellow musicians, music critics and jazz publications for her “amazingly powerful voice with seemingly limitless expression,” “faultless technique,” “sheer beauty of tone,” “special insight and affection” and “uncanny vocal virtuosity.” She has been studying the craft of singing for over two decades and frequently conducts clinics. Planet’s busy concert schedule takes her to performing arts centers, opera houses, colleges and universities, jazz festivals and jazz clubs across the USA and beyond. She has performed with many other accomplished artists, including Ellis Marsalis, George Benson, Nancy King, John Harmon, Gene Bertoncini and Marian McPartland.

Lake Effect will warm up the stage for Ms. Planet on April 2. Formed 15 years ago by Eddie Muniz (keyboards) and Bennet Olsen (saxophone), the group has previously opened for Spiro Gyra and Kim Waters. Individually, Muniz, Olsen, Mike DeRose (guitar), Dwyne Williams (bass), Robert Figueroa (percussion) and Glenn Williams (drums) are sought-after session musicians. (Figueroa appeared on the Jean’s Jazz stage with Nabori on March 5.) Together their sound suggests The Yellow Jackets, David Sanborn and Marcus Miller.

Jean’s Jazz Series offers superior acoustics and unobstructed sightlines; beautiful, smoke-free surroundings and comfortable seating; cash bar, including premium beers; and the chance to meet and greet some of the area’s top talents, as well as fellow music lovers. Two sizzling sets are separated by a half-hour break to enjoy complimentary gourmet desserts and coffee provided by Tricia’s Tasty Pastries and Mocha Lisa.

In addition to Educators Credit Union, sponsorship is provided by Landmark Title of Racine, Norco Manufacturing, BobInsurance.com and Maresh-Meredith & Acklam Funeral Home.

Individual tickets are available for $14 adults, $12 for seniors (62 and over), and just $5 for students (21 and under). Box office hours are 12 to 6 p.m. on weekdays, and vary on weekends. For further information, visit www.jeansjazzseries.com or www.racinetheatre.org.
