National Day of Action for DREAM Act

By The Racine News Team

Voces de la FronteraMilwaukee, WI – “No student who is willing to work hard for their dream of a better life should be denied that opportunity. Passing the DREAM act would create a domino effect benefiting students, their communities and our country positively. It’s time to let the DREAM students do more than dream of a better future, let’s let them act on those dreams.” says Sonia Espinosa student at Greendale High School.

On Wednesday, September 23rd, youth from around the country will hold simultaneous actions in support of the DREAM Act – an immigration bill that would create a path to citizenship for undocumented young people. Each year, more than 65,000 undocumented students graduate from high school, but because they lack immigration status, these students face uncertain futures. In partnership with the United We Dream Network, a national volunteer- led network of undocumented youth and their allies, Students United for Immigrant Rights (SUFRIR)- the youth chapter of Voces de la Frontera is organizing postcard drives at several local high schools and Universities and a city wide DREAM Act campaign kick off event with hip hop performers, Miss Mexican fiesta and information and skits about the DREAM Act. Organizers are anticipating close to 50 students, youth and educators from all over Milwaukee to participate in this event.

Jason Gonzalez, a teacher at Messmer High School will be there, he says “I’ll be coming to stand in solidarity with many of my students who would benefit from the DREAM Act. How can I tell them that hard work and good moral character will help them achieve their dreams while knowing that the current system will not give these students the means necessary to achieve such dreams? We need the DREAM Act to pass in 2009.”
