Wisconsin Democrats are simply too soft on criminals and are failing in their obligation to protect public safety.

Madison, WI – In light of the implementation of a new early release of prisoners program championed by Wisconsin Democrats, the Republican Party of Wisconsin is requesting the Department of Corrections reveal detailed information about each criminal being prematurely released into the community.

“Wisconsin Democrats are handing get-out-of-jail-free cards to criminals who have been convicted of retail theft, driving while intoxicated, operating a vehicle without consent, forgery, burglary, drug possession and disorderly conduct,” according to Mark Jefferson, Chairman of the Republican Party of Wisconsin. “These infractions are cause for public concern, and the public deserves to know the names and whereabouts of these criminals if they’re out of jail before the end of their term.”

Illinois Governor Pat Quinn recently announced his state will be scaling back its early release program after evidence that the criminals released before their sentence was complete are reoffending at alarming rates.

“Wisconsin Democrats are simply too soft on criminals and are failing in their obligation to protect public safety,” Jefferson said. “While they keep claiming the early release program is to save money, it’s worth noting the same Democrats just increased spending in the Wisconsin state budget by nearly four billion dollars.”

Jefferson said the Republican Party of Wisconsin expects the Department of Corrections will comply quickly and efficiently to an open records request sent today asking for the names, criminal history, hometown, original sentence, and total time served of each prisoner that has been or is currently being considered to be released early.
