Grothman Asks Assembly to Defeat Brewers Ticket Sales Bill

Madison, WI – Today, State Senator Glenn Grothman (R-West Bend) called upon the State Assembly to defeat Senate Bill 458, a bill which will make it illegal to sell tickets outside Brewers games and other sporting events outside a designated area. The Brewers have testified that current patrons are being harassed by ticket scalpers wanting to buy or sell tickets.

“I have attended over 100 Brewers games in my lifetime and I never remember being harassed by anyone,” said Grothman. “If this bill is enacted, any fan who arrives at a game with a couple of extra tickets because someone got sick could receive a $10 ticket for the first offense and $500 for any violation thereafter. Contact with law enforcement is traumatic for any law-abiding citizen, and I’m sure this would ruin the experience for many fans.”

“The Brewers and the Milwaukee Police Department claim they will not abuse their discretion. However, we all remember events which took place at a Milwaukee Bucks game in which a season ticket holder was even jailed for selling a ticket. This led to the current law allowing some sales,” said Grothman. “The Brewers are receiving a public subsidy of over $300 Million to build their stadium. The Brewers also pay no property taxes on their land.

I’m sure the Brewers would sell a few less tickets as fans get tickets from scalpers, but given the huge amount of money they are making, it seems piggy to prevent these few extra sales.”

“I call upon the State Assembly to do what the State Senate did not do and allow intermittent sales at Miller Park and other venues around the state,” said Grothman.
