Former Marquette University standout and international businessman Ulice Payne Jr. will be the featured speaker that morning.

The event which will begin at 7:30 am is being held on behalf of the Boy Scouts of America, Southeast Wisconsin Council at Roma Lodge – 7130 Spring Street.
“I love it when we can come together and honor those who have served our community and impacted the quality of life in our area,” said Mayor Dickert. “This breakfast will certainly allow us to do that as we honor those who have achieved the highest rank possible in the Boy Scouts – Eagle Scout.

“The rank of Eagle Scout has produced some real leaders throughout American history in areas such as government, space exploration, business, and sports. It will be a pleasure to honor those that who have achieved this rank locally and have been difference makers in our community and to especially be able to do it with a speaker like Mr. Payne.”

Licensed managers, practitioners and instructors from southeast Wisconsin in the barbering and cosmetology profession, as well as the general public, are encouraged to attend the meeting and see firsthand how their licensing and regulatory body works. “Holding this type of meeting outside Madison is part of a broader effort to make the work of licensing and regulatory boards more visible and accessible to the people of the state,” said DRL Secretary Celia Jackson.

The meeting will include a discussion of new continuing education requirements which are being developed in the barbering and cosmetology professions as well as the possibility of developing a separate license track for barbers and hair braiders. A representative of Prometric (the State of
Wisconsin’s examination vendor for barbering and cosmetology) has been invited to the meeting to provide information and answer questions.

The Barbering and Cosmetology Examining Board consists of nine members. The board is responsible for overseeing the licensing and practice of barbering and cosmetology professionals, including acting where needed to discipline individuals who act improperly in the practice of their profession.

Those planning to attend the meeting should park in Parking Lot D on the Racine Campus. For a campus map and driving directions, please visit Gateway Technical College on the web at: http://gtc.edu.

New LGBT Center Art Gallery Exhibit Asks: “A Hint of Homosexuality?”

Racine, WI—A new exhibit at the LGBT Center of SE Wisconsin asserts that ideas about homosexuality can be traced in print advertisements appearing in American periodicals from as far back as a century ago.

Based on Professor Bruce H. Joffe’s book A Hint of Homosexuality? Gay and Homoerotic Imagery in American Print Advertising (Xlibris: 2007), the gallery at the LGBT Center features original copies of more than 60 classic print advertisements. Sponsored in part by a grant from the Racine Arts Council, the exhibit will be on display at the LGBT Center through December with a special, members-only reception on Friday, October 30.

The author examines trends, themes and advertising campaigns that, he contends, support a basis for believing romantic and/or sexual interest between members of the same sex appeared in ads published by American newspapers and magazines.

Explicit or implied, impressions of homosexuality in more than 225 advertisements published by major manufacturers, retailers, companies and well-known brands in American periodicals over the past hundred years or so are depicted.

Some same-sex ads are “strangely erotic while others may be silly caricatures, more burlesque than bizarre,” Joffe maintains. By and large, however, “most tend to be snapshots of the male (and, to a lesser extent, female) convivial spirit encountered and observed in intimate conditions and circumstances.”

Joffe says: “Gay intimacy and interaction, references to the male genitalia, and threats of sexual conquest can be seen in advertisements created by some of the greatest illustrators, designers and copywriters of the twentieth century.”

And, although the images reflected in their advertising mirror are fewer and farther between, “women who prefer the company of other women similarly have been goosed and gandered by Madison Ave,” the author argues in a chapter dedicated to lesbians.

“Whoever they are and whatever they’re doing, it’s apparent that displays of affection and intimacy between and among people of the same sex can be inferred in these advertisements.”

Formerly a professor of communication at Mary Baldwin College (Staunton, VA), and earlier at George Mason University (Fairfax, VA) who has focused on gender studies, today Dr. Joffe is an associate professor of communication at Carthage College and executive director of the LGBT Center of SE Wisconsin.

His book, upon which this exhibit is based, was named “Winner” and best book in the Gay/Lesbian: Non-Fiction category of The National Best Books 2008 Awards competition sponsored by USA Book News. Earlier, the title was honored as a Bronze Medalist in the Gay/Lesbian category of the 2008 IPPY Awards Competition.

Racine, WI – “As a Latino student it is insulting to me that Representative Paul Ryan would provide an interview to FAIR, a group with known ties to white supremacists,” says Christian Pacheco, a junior at St. Catherine’s High School and member of Students United for Immigrant Rights (SUFRIR), “Racine should not be a home for hate and our politicians shouldn’t associate with hate groups.”

Voces de la Frontera and its student affiliates SUFRIR and Students United in the Struggle (SUITS) will rally Tuesday outside Representative Paul Ryan’s Racine office. The protest was prompted by Paul Ryan’s recent participation in the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR)’s “Hold Their Feet to the Fire” event in September. FAIR has been designated a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center and has been strongly denounced by national civil rights organizations such as the Anti-Defamation League and the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights. They have employed known white nationalists, accepted major donations from a foundation dedicated to the promotion of eugenics and its founder has well-documented ties to the white nationalist movement.

“All humans should be obligated to respect equal rights” says Jarasha Williams, a senior at Case High School and member of SUITS, “we’ve been working hard to build unity in Racine and this move by our congressman is not helping us move towards equality.”

This is not the first time that FAIR has been the source of controversy in Racine. “In 2004 FAIR unsuccessfully tried to strip me of my license to register voters by claiming I was an undocumented immigrant” recalls Maria Morales of Voces de la Frontera, “I was born in Texas. I worked for Racine County for over a decade. They made that claim based on my race and my commitment to the immigrant struggle. It is an outrage Paul Ryan would give any credence to their lies.”

The rally will begin at 3:30 pm outside Ryan’s Racine office. Protesters will be carrying a giant pledge against hate which they will be asking the congressman to sign. The protest also coincides with a national march in Washington DC calling for comprehensive immigration reform.

Two thousand nine is almost over and deportations continue to rise and immigration reform is nowhere in sight. Doing nothing is not an option. We are joining our allies across the nation to call on Obama to stop the deportations, pass the DREAM Act in 2009 and work with congress to introduce a pro worker, pro family immigration reform bill to this year so it can pass in early 2010.” says Christine Neumann Ortiz, executive director of Voces de la Frontera about the mass march and rally the group is organizing Saturday October 10th.

The march and rally, which will begin at Voces de la Frontera, 1027 s 5th st, will kick off a national week of action for comprehensive immigration reform. Rich Stolz of Reform Immigration For America, a campaign dedicated to the passage of comprehensive immigration reform, explains, “Our families and communities are suffering because of the inaction of politicians. The need and moral imperative is urgent. The President and Congressional leaders repeatedly stated that America should not be tearing families apart but should be solving problems. They need to be reminded of their promises.”

In Milwaukee, marchers will be reinforcing that message of family unity and are calling for a stop to deportations. They are calling on Congress to adopt the principles that will be laid out by Representative Luis Gutierrez for a fair and comprehensive immigration reform in Washington DC on October 13th. Additionally, marchers are calling for driver’s cards for immigrants and passage of a higher education bill called the DREAM Act. A new demand taken up by the marchers is the defense of commercial and professional licenses- an issue raised recently by the Milwaukee city council. Organizers believe that requiring proof of legal residency would be destructive to Milwaukee’s economy, “That would be a total job killer” says Tony Garnica, a naturalized US citizen, south side resident and owner of Tasos Hair Salon “the last thing we want to do during this time of recession is take away professional and commercial licenses from small businesses that are employing people and stimulating the economy.”

From Voces de la Frontera marchers will go to Mitchell Park. Street theater including a large puppet of Lou Dobbs will be utilized to reinforce the marcher’s demands and highlight the scapegoating of immigrants in this time of economic crisis. A large turnout is expected.

Milwaukee, WI – More than ever employment and the economic survival of our region have a common challenge – access to good public transit. A look back at work done during the past two years and a look at the future tasks that need to be done…this is the focus of two events being held in September: the 8th Annual Community Development Summit and the 3rd Annual Symposium on Poverty.

Milwaukee has the 7th highest poverty rate of large U.S. cities. According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2007 American Community Survey, 24.4%, virtually one-quarter, of Milwaukee residents are living below the poverty line.

Add to this, the fact that 67% percent of the jobs in metro Milwaukee (the 4-county region) are located in the outlying areas and only one-third of City of Milwaukee residents own a car and you have a perfect storm for increasing unemployment and poverty coupled with employers facing an increasingly constricted labor market.

Two local non-profit organizations seek to reverse this trend and will be focusing on the topics of transit, poverty and economic viability in two upcoming events.

The Urban Economic Development Association of Wisconsin (UEDA) in cooperation with the Greater Milwaukee Committee and the City of Milwaukee will be hosting their 8th Annual Community Development Summit on September 18, 2009, “Regional Transit: Get on Board,” will be held on Friday, Sept. 18, 2009 from 7:30AM to Noon, at the Italian Conference Center, 631 E. Chicago St., Milwaukee. The event is open to the public and online registration is available at www.ueadawi.org or call 414-562-9904.

Attendees will hear from Mayor Tom Barrett, State of Wisconsin Secretary of Administration Michael Morgan, and Keynote Speaker Scott Bernstein, Founder and President of the Center for Neighborhood Technology (CNT) in Chicago as well as a reaction panel of business and civic leaders from the region who will discuss transit and its impact on their organizations. Attendees will be asked to interact with presenters and participants throughout the morning to help facilitate a healthy discussion and will have also have the opportunity to give a video Testimonial.

Summit organizers are also working in conjunction with another signature event, the Social Development Commission’s Symposium on Poverty, which will be held Wednesday, September 23, 2009 from 8:00AM to 2:00PM at the Italian Conference Center in Milwaukee. At the Symposium, the Bridge of Hope Coalition work groups will report on their accomplishments in the past year, identify the challenges that lie ahead for them, and also solicit public participation on roundtable sessions.

Keynote speaker for the Symposium will be Don Sykes, CEO of the Milwaukee Area Workforce Investment Board. Registration is underway for the Symposium on Poverty. The day is free and open to the public but space is limited. If you are interested in registering for the Symposium, call 414-906-2797 or visit the SDC website at www.cr-sdc.org.

The public, community and civic organizations, businesses, government representatives and others are all invited to get more deeply involved in supporting these efforts underway that address access to jobs, opportunity and combating poverty. Let’s get moving!

Racine, WI – The Racine Art Museum has commissioned internationally acclaimed glass artist Therman Statom to create a new exhibition for its Windows on Fifth Gallery. The year-long exhibition, “Therman Statom: Outside the Box” features lively painted glass arrangements of unusual objects brought together to encourage viewers to create their own imaginative connections. For the first time since its opening, RAM has allowed an artist to alter its space in the windows. Statom has painted on the frosted glass walls that divide the window space from the main first floor gallery. The painted glass walls rest behind the installation giving the effect that RAM’s entire window space is one large Statom box.

Installation image of Therman Statom: Outside of the Box Photography: Jessica Zalewski, Milwaukee

Statom titled the work “The Four Seasons” and the installation includes elements that suggest aspects of each season-frosty areas of glass, glowing colors from nature, and floral imagery, vessels that suggest growing pods and buds. His title also refers to the fact that the installation will be on display through July 26, 2010. Statom has used glass boxes filled with collaged elements, as well as neon light tubes and mirrored surfaces. The mirrors-including a large-scale chair that is eight feet tall-reflect images from the street and sidewalk back to the viewer, bringing the outdoors into the composition.

Using everyday window glass and silicone, Statom creates square and rectangular shadowboxes, as well as commonplace items such as houses, chairs and ladders. He fills these boxes with collages of found and fabricated objects. Statom then actively paints the interiors of these boxes with bright colors before sealing them. Statom shows these cases either separately, hanging on walls or stacked to form groupings of arrangements that the viewer walks around.

Throughout his career, Statom has inspired audiences to see glass as a medium for sculpture by using it to create large-scale sculptures and room-sized installations. His mixed media installations and sculptural groupings combine painting, sculpture and architecture in enthusiastic and intellectually playful arrangements. Statom uses the materials in ways that are not conventionally craftsman-like in their assemblage.

Statom has pushed the boundaries of his medium by challenging his audience to look at glass in new and interesting ways. He is a pioneer in the use of glass as a material for sculpture and room-size installation art. Statom’s works can be found in major museum collections across the US, including: the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Toledo Museum of Art, the High Museum of Art (Atlanta), the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Racine Art Museum.

Therman Statom will return to the museum in March 2010 to modify the exhibition and create a fresh new experience.

This exhibition is made possible by: Presenting Sponsors – Karen Johnson Boyd and William B. Boyd, RAM Society Members, S.C. Johnson & Son, Inc., The Hearst Foundation, Inc., and Windgate Charitable Foundation; Gold Sponsors – Racine United Arts Fund and Wisconsin Arts Board; Silver Sponsors – Helen Bader Foundation, Racine Community Foundation, Inc., and Walker Forge, Inc.; Bronze Sponsors – Art Alliance for Contemporary Glass, Midwest Contemporary Glass Art Group, and Target.

Somlai, a peace teacher and student for 40 years, teaches how to quiet thinking so our natural peace energy can appear. “Peace Vigil” lays out a 108-day peace practice that uses concrete insights, teachings and homework assignments to help the reader on the peace path.

Somlai’s appearance at Sheepish will include a brief talk, an exercise from the book and a chance to ask questions.
“The greatest logic is to create a peaceful life that helps others,” Somlai writes in Day 20 of “Peace Vigil.”

“It is time to fearlessly wake up to the mind that insists peace is hopeless.”
