Man charged in north side Christmas time armed robberies

Melvin L Powell/ML Powell 44, of Racine has been charged with four counts of Armed Robbery with Use of Force, six counts of Bail Jumping-Felony, and Possess w/ Intent/Deliver Narcotics. He was given a $50,000 cash bond after making his initial appearance in Racine Circuit Courts. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for January 7, 2016. According to online court records he has open felony cases that were filed in September and November of 2015.

According to the criminal complaint, on December 25, 2015, Racine Police took a report of an armed robbery. According to the victim her and her friends had been leaving Rudy’s Bar, in the area of Douglas Ave and Augusta St., entered their vehicle when a black male entered the car and pointed a handgun at them and threatened to shoot them if they did not follow his directions. The suspect had them drive to the 2100 block of Charles where he stole the victims purses. During the course of the investigation a victim was able to positively ID the defendant as the person who robbed them.

On December 26, 2015 another victim was walking in the area of Augusta and Douglas Ave., towards Rudy’s Bar when the suspect ran up behind her and grabbed her purse. When she turned around the the suspect struck her several times in the face with a handgun. The suspect knocked her down and dragged her several feet until he was able to get her purse. The victim was able to positively identify the suspect through a photo line up.

Investigators with the Racine Police Department executed a search warrant at the defendant’s address and were able to locate clothing that match the surveillance video and two prescription bottles of medicine. When the defendant was questioned he stated that he had purchased the pills from a man in the house. A victim was able to identify both prescriptions belonging to her and that she had just filled them.
