Milton D. McCain 23, of Racine has been charged with attempted armed robbery as a repeater and was given a $50,000 cash bond after making his initial appearance in Racine Circuit Courts.
According to the criminal complaint, on December 15,2015 at 7:33 p.m. Racine Police responded to Douglas Hardware located at 2030 Douglas Ave, for an attempted robbery.
Upon arrival officers spoke to a witness who stated that a black male later identified as the defendant, entered the store and was acting suspicious for a number of reasons. The witness stated that it appeared the defendant was canvassing the store, looking around in all the aisles, asking if the store was open and it appeared that the defendants front sweatshirt pockets were bulging and he had pulled the hood up over his head and was wearing a distinct “neck warmer”. The defendant asked the victim if they carried gardening gloves and he was showed the selection of gloves available. The witness feeling something wasn’t right went to grab a phone in case police were needed to be called.
According to the complaint the witness heard the cashier yelling to call 911. Racine Police spoke with the victim who stated that she saw the defendant enter the store, and come to the register with the pair of gloves. According to statements, the defendant placed them on the counter by the cash register, place his hands in the front pocket of his sweatshirt and told the clerk “Open your cash drawer!” The victim ran from behind the counter and yelled for the witness to call police because she believed she was being robbed.
The defendant was located a short distance from the store and matched the description and clothing description of the suspect. He was transported to the detective bureau and formally interviewed. Police reports note at the time of the incident, the defendant was on parole for for the offense of armed robbery.
