Man charged with OWI causing injury after accident early Wednesday morning

Tristan S. Tompkins, 31 of Racine has been charged with OWI Cause Injury (2+) and was given a $2,500 cash bond after making his initial appearance today in Racine Circuit Court. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for September 16,2015.

According to the criminal complaint, on September 9, 2015 at 6:15 a.m., Racine Police responded to 16th and Flett for an accident with injuries. Upon arrival police spoke with the victims and also witnesses. All parties stated that the defendant had been driving south on Flett Ave when he ran a stop sign striking the victim vehicle. The defendants vehicle came to a stop on the hood of the victim’s vehicle.

The driver of the other vehicle suffered injuries but stated he would transport himself to the hospital, The passenger suffered injuries and was transported by rescue to Wheaten Franciscan.

According to the complaint when officers asked the defendant to fill out a form, he appeared confused, his speech was slightly slurred and could not fill it out properly. While officers were standing near the defendant they observed a strong odor of alcoholic beverages emitting from his person and breath.

The defendant was asked to submit to three OWI screenings. According to police he was not able to properly complete them and the test was stopped for his safety. The defendant was transported to Wheaten Franciscan to a legal blood draw and then taken into custody
