Milwaukee man charged after crashing stolen car in Racine

leavell Traveon D Leavell, 20 of Milwaukee has been charged with Drive or Operate Vehicle w/o Consent, Vehicle Operator Flee/Elude Officer and Reckless Driving-Cause Great Bodily Harm. He was given a $15,000 cash bond after making his initial appearance Wednesday in Racine Circuit Court.

According to the criminal complaint on December 31, 2015 Milwaukee Police responded to Capital Drive for reports of a stolen vehicle. Milwaukee officers were able to view video surveillance shows a 2005 Green Dodge Caravan being stolen. Officers learned that the vehicle had GPS tracking enabled.

The Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department were alerted by dispatch of the vehicle being stolen and the location being tracked to Highway 50 and I-94. Deputies located the vehicle at KR and tried to initiate a traffic stop when the vehicle accelerated to speeds of 108 MPH into Racine County.

The criminal complaint states that the Wisconsin State Patrol positioned their squad with lights and siren in the middle of I-94 at Highway 11 in an attempt to slow the stolen vehicle. The defendant attempted to swerve around the State Patrol Squad when he lost control striking another vehicle and pushing it into the median wall.

The stolen vehicle rolled and landed on it’s roof. The defendant stated to authorities that he was the driver and fled because he didn’t want to go to jail. Deputies learned the defendants driving privileges were revoked and there was a warrant for his arrest. The passenger in the stolen vehicle suffered significant injuries and was transported by Flight for Life to Children’s Hospital.
