Plane clips semi while attempting to land at Sylvania Airport

RCSOOn 02/01/16 at 5:21 P.M. the Racine County Sheriffs Office was dispatched for an airplane that struck a semi tractor trailer on I94 south of STH 20 while attempting to land at the Sylvania Airport. The airplanes rear landing gear was torn off as a result of striking the semi tractor trailer and the airplane aborted the landing then circled the airport. The airplane then landed in a grass area and came to rest near the end of the run way on the grass within the Sylvania Airport property.

The plane operator was an experienced pilot and 65 year old Racine resident who was traveling with his wife. Union Grove Fire/Rescue responded to the scene and later checked the pilot and occupant, both reported no injuries and were released on scene. The pilot stated he left Batten Airport ( Located in Racine WI) around 4:30 P.M. today to sight see.

Witnesses to this event stated the semi tractor trailer continued southbound on I94 and were unable to provide any further description. Law enforcement was not able to locate the semi tractor trailer involved. There was a secondary auto accident as a result of airplane debris on the interstate. This accident was a no injury property damage only.

The FAA has been contacted and this incident is under investigation. The Sylvania Airport remains open for business.
