Racine County Medication Collection Event is a Success

medicineFor fourth time this year, Racine County residents emptied medicine cabinets, bedside tables, and kitchen drawers of unwanted, unused, and expired medications and took them to a Racine County Medication Collection Event.

On Saturday, October 15th, Central Racine County Health Department, City of Racine Health Department and numerous volunteers collected over eleven barrels of medications from eastern Racine County residents.  In total, 727 cars passed through the lines dropping off an estimate of 1550 pounds of medications.  Additionally, 450 pounds of pill bottles and cardboard were separated from the medications and recycled.  This is the eighth year the health departments have sponsored these type of events.  Over the years, a total of 27,188 pounds or 13.6 US tons has been collected.

The medication collection events provide a convenient, safe and environmentally responsible way to dispose of unneeded medications.  Properly discarding unused medication protects the environment by keeping drugs out of the waterways and landfills as well as keeps potentially harmful drugs from getting into the wrong hands.

If you missed this medication collection event, there is another one scheduled for Saturday, October 22nd at the Norway Town Hall located at 6419 Heg Park Road, Wind Lake, WI.  Residents are invited to drop off any outdated or unused medication, including prescription medication.  No sharps or biohazardous materials will be accepted.

In addition to the medication collection events, there are also numerous drop boxes throughout the county.  The majority of all local Racine County law enforcement agencies now have a medication drop box for residents to dispose of unwanted medications. Boxes are located at:
