Racine man charged in Mt. Pleasant accident that critically injured passenger

Christopher B Hetchler, 21 of Racine has been charged with Injury by Use/Vehicle-Control. Substance, Cause Injury/Operate-Control. Substance (1st) (PAC<0.15), Possession of THC, Possess Drug Paraphernalia. He was given a $7,500 cash bond after making his initial appearance in Racine Circuit Court Wednesday afternoon. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 16, 2016.

According to the criminal complaint on March 7 an officer with the Mount Pleasant Police Department en route to another call was stopped at a red light at 90th Street and Highway 20. The officer witnessed a Dodge Ram driving eastbound on Highway 20 when the defendants vehicle failed to yield and turned directly?in front the victim vehicle. The crash resulted in both vehicles spinning and the defendants vehicle crashed into a pole.

 

The officer ran to the vehicles the driver in Dodge stated he was ok, the officer then ran to the defendants vehicle and found the defendant apologizing to the passenger who was not conscious, slumped over and bleeding from the head. The officer asked the defendant to move from the vehicle since the passenger side was crushed trapping the injured party so he could render first aid. While rendering first aid the officer saw directly in plain view 2 baggies of marijuana and a glass pipe. Another officer took the defendant into custody while the victim was being extricated and life saving measures were being taken by rescue personnel. The passenger was airlifted by Flight For Life due to his severe injuries, the complaint reads.

 

According the the complaint the defendant was remorseful and cooperative, stated that the marijuana was his and had admitted to smoking it in the vehicle. He did consent to a blood draw and was transported to Racine County Jail after being medically cleared.
