school suppliesThe City of Racine is pleased to announce an opportunity for a number of area children to receive backpacks filled with supplies for the upcoming school year. This has been made possible thanks to the generosity of a local business and health care provider, MH Imaging, LLC, of 6800 Washington Avenue, Suite B, in Mount Pleasant. The backpack giveaway will take place at MH Imaging on Thursday, August 20, from 5:00 – 7:00 pm.

Intended as a way of giving back to Racine community and ensuring that area children are ready for school in the coming weeks, this event was created by Jeanie Hatfield, a teacher within Racine Unified School District for more than 20 years, former Miss Wisconsin, and wife of MH Imaging’s founder, Dr. Malcolm Hatfield. “I want to promote the importance of education and help kids celebrate the start of a new school year,” said Jeanie Hatfield. “I love the excitement of new school supplies and want to help parents during back-to-school crunch time.”

The backpacks being distributed at the event will be filled with pencils, notebooks, folders, and other school supply essentials that every child needs for success in the classroom. In order to qualify to receive a backpack, children at the event must attend a school in the Racine area and be eligible for the National School Lunch Program’s free and reduced price lunch program under 2015-2016 guidelines. Each eligible child in attendance at the event will receive one backpack, with a total of 186 backpacks to be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Interested parents should contact their school’s food service program for income limits.

A number of recognizable faces will be present at the event, including City of Racine Mayor John Dickert and Mount Pleasant Village President Jerry Garski. The current Miss Wisconsin, Rosalie Smith, will also be present to greet children and families and to sign autographs. In addition, children at the event will be provided a healthy snack and the MH Imaging facility will hold an open house for anyone interested. Attendees should park in the parking lot on the rear (north) side of the building at 6800 Washington Avenue, where the event will be held.
