On 07/14/15 at approximately 10:30pm, the Racine County Communications Center received a third party call about a vessel in distress on Lake Michigan. Information received was that a sailboat was not far from the Racine Harbor and the captain of the boat, Greg Jackson (62yoa, Middleton, WI), was unresponsive. Thomas Hausenbauer (63 yoa, St Peter, MN), a friend of Gregs, was onboard at the time and was not able to sail the boat, a 44.5 foot Catalina, to dock, and was in need of assistance. The US Coast Guard was called to assist in bringing the boat to dock.
While the Coast Guard was responding the Racine Fire Dept. was able to send their boat to the sail boat and bring Greg to shore. Greg was transported to Wheaton Franciscan Racine where he was pronounced deceased. Initial investigation shows that Greg was working on an issue that arose with a sail towards the bow of the boat. A short time later Thomas saw that Greg was overboard in the water on the side of the boat. Thomas was able to get Greg back into the boat and called for assistance. At this time it appears that this was a tragic accident.
