Woman charged with felony retail theft after allegedly bragging about the crime

Barbara A Kile, 54 of Racine has been charged with one count of Retail Theft – Intentionally Take >$500 – $5000) (felony). She was given a $200.00 cash bond after making her initial appearance today in Racine Circuit Court. According to Racine County Jail records there is also a hold on her from Department of Corrections.

According to the criminal complaint on September 21, 2015 Mount Pleasant Police responded to the Piggly Wiggly at 5201 Washington Ave for a report of shoplifting, upon arrival police spoke with employees who stated that on September 19,2015 a woman (later identified as the defendant) was seen walking around the store placing various items in her cart including 26 steaks. The monetary value was $503.29. Video surveillance given to police show the suspect place the items in her cart, exit the store without paying for the items.

Police were recontacted by employees stating that they had heard that the defendant was bragging about doing a retail theft and was describing the items. Police were able to locate a residence for the defendant and tried to make contact with her on September 25. Neighbors stated that she had just left her residence and was walking, police were able to contact her by phone and she had told them according to the criminal complaint she had contacted her PO told her what happened and was walking to jail. When asked by officers why she was doing that she replied “because of the retail theft I did”.

When interviewed by police she allegedly told them that she made a mistake and stole some food because she didn’t have anything to eat.
