Latara D. Miller, 24 of Racine has been charged with Hit and Run-Involve Injury, 2nd-Degree Recklessly Endangering Safety, Take and Drive Vehicle w/o Consent, Theft-Movable Property <=$2500 and Resisting or Obstructing an Officer. She was given a $5,000 cash bond after making her appearance Friday September 11, 2015 in Racine Circuit Court.
According to the criminal complaint, the owner of the vehicle contact Racine Police to report the defendant had took her vehicle without permission and if she didn’t return it by 3 p.m. she was calling police. On that day at 7:40 p.m. Racine Police also responded to Family Dollar on Rapids Drive for a shop lifting and that the suspect vehicle had hit a pedestrian. Witnesses reported the defendant take a pink diaper bag and filled it with items. Employees followed her out of the store, witnessed her get into a red vehicle and then striking a pedestrian while fleeing the scene.
At 10:42 p.m. Racine Police were notified of a possible accident in the area of 1700 block of Carlisle A witness reports she saw a red vehicle behind her swerving, heard a collision and realized that vehicle was no longer behind her. The witness pulled over and saw the red vehicle pass her and that the right front tire was blown and she was riding on the rim. Police did locate a car that was parked and found damage to the vehicle.
The complaint states that while police were collecting information, an intoxicated driver was reported at McDonald’s on Douglas Avenue, in a red vehicle and that were was a younger child in the vehicle. When officers arrived to investigate they found a 4 year old child in the front seat without a car seat.
When officers spoke to the defendant she stated she was at a family member’s house in the 1100 block of Carlisle and that they went to McDonald’s but her friend had been driving. She denied hitting any other vehicles and stated her friend must have left McDonald’s.
According to the complaint field sobriety tests were, and according to reports the defendant failed them. Breath test was administered and the results were .06. While being transported to Racine County Jail she kicked the squad window and then while being escorted into the Racine County Jail she became more agitated and attempted to kick the officer.
