On Thursday, September 1st, 2016 at 8:20 p.m., Mount Pleasant Police Officers were dispatched to the area of State Highway 11/Durand Avenue and Oakes Road in reference to a vehicle crash with unknown injuries. Upon arrival, Officers observed a two (2) vehicle crash. The vehicles were a Blue Mitsubishi gallant and a Silver Volkswagen Passat. The Mitsubishi was operated by a female and had two minor passengers under the age of 16. The Volkswagen was also operated by a female and had no other occupants.
Through the course of investigating the accident, it was determined that the female operator of the Mitsubishi had failed to yield the right of way as she performed a left turn from Durand onto Oakes road. This failure led to the direct cause of the crash and after striking a westbound vehicle, she also struck and downed a traffic standard.
The crash required traffic to be diverted and the State Traffic Operations Center was notified. The female as well as her minor children were treated at the scene by the South Shore Fire Department, but no one was transported to the Emergency room. Both children were seat-belted in the vehicle and no serious injuries were recorded. The other driver in the Volkswagen was also treated at the scene but was not transported either. The female that caused the crash in the Mitsubishi was required to take Standardized Field Sobriety tests, which she subsequently failed and she was taken into custody for Operating while under the Influence and this violation is enhanced due to the children under 16 in the vehicle. She was transported to Wheaton Franciscan Emergency room by Mount Pleasant Officers and required to submit to an evidentiary blood test and the Blood Alcohol results of this test are pending. Upon receipt of the results, an update will be sent out. The children were turned over to a guardian and the scene was eventually returned to normal with no traffic obstructions.
